Particular emphasis is placed on transforming undergraduate STEM education through innovative, evidence-based recruitment and retention strategies, and relevant educational experiences in support of racial and ethnic groups historically underrepresented in STEM disciplines. The program seeks new learning and immediate diffusion of scholarly research into the field. Alliances are consortia of multiple degree-granting institutions. Projects focus on pre-college and undergraduate recruitment and retention activities.

West Yavapai Guidance Clinic Foundation. When Futurebound students transfer to UA, they can choose diverse research experiences ranging, for example, from laboratory work on genetics to field work in local desert habitats. They will share on-going research experiences with other transfer students, practice presenting their scientific research results, and be able to apply for other paid research programs at the UA.
Tutoring, mentoring and career seminars will help alleviate "transfer shock" and other obstacles to a successful academic experience at UA, Mangin said. Project faculty will compare student grade point averages and progress toward undergraduate and graduate degrees for the target group and all PCC science and engineering students to assess the efficacy of each part of the project.
The most effective strategies will be incorporated into institutional programs and can be applied to all students, Mangin added. Statistics demonstrate the need for this project, UA and PCC faculty report in their grant proposal:.

Of these, almost 15 percent entered science fields 52 in the College of Science and 62 in the College of Engineering and Mines. Minority students in science, technology and engineering accounted for 40 percent of PCC enrollment in fall , but over the period averaged 36 percent of transfer students.
Minority women averaged just 24 percent of the transfer students. According to a fall survey by gender and ethnicity of 1, PCC students in astronomy, physics, chemistry, and engineering, ethnic minority students again made up 36 percent of the enrollment in those majors.
